Aquaculture Wastewater Treatment

“Aquaculture, not the Internet, represents the most promising investment opportunity of the 21st Century.”— Peter Drucker, Management Expert & Economist

Good water quality is a critical factor in achieving successful harvests in aquaculture. The BioGill® RAS230 is a clean, safe, above ground biofilter that provides superior biofiltration at lower cost and lower energy to maintain ideal water quality in aquaculture. With BioGill® RAS230 you can help safeguard your stock.

Major Benefits of BioGill Water Recycling Aquaculture System

  • Improved water quality, reduced ammonia + stable pH
  • No chemicals, no bacteria need to be added
  • Increased stocking & feeding rates
  • Lower operating costs
  • Low to no water exchange

Improved Aquaculture with Better Biological Wastewater Treatment

BioGill technology improves pond water quality by reducing levels of ammonia and other aquaculture waste products. An independent assessment showed that in a direct comparison of the water at the inlet and outlet, the outlet water post BioGill treatment had higher dissolved oxygen (am) and lower ammonia (am/pm). This result indicates active oxidation of ammonia, a toxic by-product for most farmed fish species.

No chemicals

The BioGill® RAS230 works with the cultures already existing in the pond water. No chemicals, no bacteria and no microorganisms are added.

Increased stocking & feeding rates

Improvements in water quality will result in optimal feed performance and food conversion. Managers have noted that stock from the ponds with BioGill biofilters are healthier and have a lower percentage of disease or stress when compared to the stock in ponds with no BioGill units. Managers have also observed clearer pond water, reduction in algae, increase in stock growth rates, less purge time and overall healthier stock.

Lower operating costs

BioGill® RAS230 delivers high water quality at a lower operating cost. No blowers are used in a BioGill system. The only energy required is for the water movement from the pond to the top of the gills where gravity takes over. With minimal maintenance on the treatment cores and lower energy consumption, our technology is more cost effective to operate.

Lower water exchange

In a low intensity Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) marine brood stock system, the BioGill biofilter was equivalent to or better than the standard biofilter for water quality and energy use. Importantly, the BioGill unit was demonstrated under zero water exchange for 4 months without any obvious changes noted in fish breeding performance or behaviour. Lower exchange means there is reduced need to bring to bring in new water which could potentially introduce disease into a pond or system. Reduction of pond water discharge also reduces pressure on natural water systems.
