Tomago Village Van Park

Reducing BOD in sewage by 90+%

Size: 30,000 – 40,000 litres per day.
Location: Near Newcastle, 2 hours north of Sydney, Australia.
System Size: Two sets of 2 x BioGills. Total 1000m² of membrane.

The challenge:

Tomago Village Van Park is a large tourist park offering a wide variety of accommodation in cabins, caravans and camping sites. The park needed to improve its onsite treatment of sewage to comply with local government regulations.

The solution:

The park had an existing Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) with solid separation. BioGills were installed after the settler to increase the capacity and improve the quality of the wastewater being discharged to a pond leading to a wetland. The treated water, post BioGills, was then passed through a UV sanitisation process before going to the pond.

This pond was also harbouring large quantities of algae. Two BioGills were installed to improve the quality of water in the pond.

The results:

Independent testing from ALS Environmental reported a reduction in BOD of better than 90%. (<5mg/L in the effluent. Please note: The requirement was 20 mg/l).

In addition, the two BioGills treating the pond have dramatically reduced the algal growth. The turbidity has also greatly improved.
