Decentralilsed Sewage, SE Asia

BioGills reducing power consumption by 80% at sewage treatment site.

Size: 50,000 litres per day.
Location: The Philippines.
System Size: Four BioGills. Total 1000m² of membrane.

The challenges:

A water authority in The Philippines wanted to reduce power consumption and treat sewage wastewater to a high standard for environmentally-friendly discharge to nearby waterways.

The solution:

Four BioGills were retrofitted to an existing sewage treatment plant which consisted of one equalization tank, two aeration tanks and two clarifier tanks. For the retrofit, the equalization tank was used for the same purpose, the aeration tanks were not used, leading to a massive reduction in plant footprint and the clarification tanks served the dual purpose of treatment and clarifying.

The results:

The BioGill bioreactors have reduced power consumption by 80.25% and delivered, on average, an 89% reduction in BOD.
