Groundbreaking water treatment technology catches the eye of maritime investment company.

Clean-tech company BioGill has secured a significant investment through BW Ventures, a subsidiary of the leading global maritime group BW Group.

This will create maritime market opportunities for Australia-based BioGill, uniting its cutting-edge water treatment technology with BW’s maritime expertise and capabilities.

“The investment by BW Ventures puts BioGill on a strong footing for full commercialisation of our patented technology and rapid global expansion,” said BioGill CEO, John West.

Sverre Prytz, Managing Director, BW Ventures adds: “The BioGill technology has significant market potential for maritime application. With BW Ventures’ involvement, we are opening doors to more effective water management solutions onboard vessels and offshore platforms.”

The BioGill system is proven effective in treating grey water, sewage and wastewater from aquaculture, food and beverage processing and a wide range of other industrial streams. Based on a technology developed in the research laboratories of ANSTO, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, this unique bioreactor harnesses the decomposing abilities of microorganisms housed in an above-ground environment.

Its simple yet superior design is not only effective but also efficient, requiring considerably less energy and maintenance than conventional biological wastewater treatment systems. Nano-Ceramic Membranes™ provide the optimal oxygen-rich conditions for bacteria and fungi to grow and multiply, resulting in accelerated treatment.

Trials and commercial installations have yielded extremely positive results, revealing up to 96% reductions in Biological Oxygen Demand - a widely used indication of the organic quality of water.
Offshore, BioGill’s flexible design offers additional benefits. Retrofitting into existing wastewater treatment systems provides a low-cost solution for greatly improving existing systems’ treatment capacity.
